Road Trippin', Secunda Style

The bustling metropolis
After weeks of planning, the day finally arrived. Bright and early on Saturday, after some pretty wicked partying with my big sisters the night before, I made my way to the East Rand to meet La, Angie and Heidi before we hit the road to the bustling metropolis of Secunda. The excitement was tangible, the anticipation was… Oh, cut the crap. I was bouncing in the car, squeeing and yelping in excitement and driving Maja and Mister Boo nuts. They were exhausted and severely hung over, respectively. Let’s just say there was a lot of grimacing and eye-rolling from them as I pumped up the AC/DC and such on the way there.

Squee!

I was poinging around the parking lot while I waited for Angie, and just after she came to find me, La and Heidi arrived. MUCH poinging and squeeing and loudness ensued. I’m sure Angie’s neighbours were cursing us in a way that would make Mojo Jojo proud. We bid Maja and Mister Boo adieu and motored over to Angie’s house, where we all squeed some more. Alex’s smile when we said goodbye said “I’m glad I’m not putting up with a pack of girls running on glitter-anticipation all day.”

Yup. This is how it started...
Our first port of call was the garage, where we stocked up on cookies, fudge, donut holes and Nifty Nibs. We bounced around the store as we waited for our coffee. The check-out ladies eyed us suspiciously, and I don’t blame them. I mean, who has that kind of energy on a Saturday morning??? Us. And it’s intimidating. We each got our coffee barcode stickers, and I ran out of hands, so I just stuck mine on Angie, hoping the ladies would scan it from her cheek. They didn’t. First pout of the day. It would have been awesome to hold the scanner up to her face and hear a “piep”! Alas, the check-out lady eyed me especially wearily and when I saw her reaching for the panic button, I relented and gave her the stupid sticker. *rolls eyes* Too bad they sold out of fun so early in the day.

Once we left the land of no imagination, we hit the road for real. La made a couple of mix CDs of 90’s nostalgia, so we bopped along to everything from punk to pop to Pearl Jam as we made our way away from Joburg and all its wonders. We drove past a sewerage farm, and all took pictures.

Where they grow shit...

We drove past a squatter camp, and all took pictures.

Where they squat...

I’m not sure why, because it’s definitely not the first squatter camp any of us had seen. Nonetheless… The drive was actually a really pretty one, despite the fact that things are starting to get all dry and brown with autumn. The cosmos has started to pop up on the side of the road, and gave a really pretty frame to the view for most of the trip.

It was a long-ish drive there, but we didn’t waste a moment; there was lots of randomness and craziness in that little car.
The angel who looked after us

Look Shell, a TACTA!!!!

We took pictures of everything, including tractors.* Before we even saw a ‘Secunda’ sign, we knew we were getting close. Our chests started getting tight and each of us had a little coughing fit, which was fun.
*cough*splutter*choke*die*

We consoled ourselves with more cookies and fudge and car-aoke, which we have honed to a fine art. When we finally saw a ‘Secunda’ sign, we squealed with anticipation, and at a pitch which may have caused some of the surrounding farms’ dogs to howl. The time was drawing near!

Funky Town, this way

Possibly the most awesome moment of the whole day? As we drove into town, a new song started playing on La's mix CD... FUNKY TOWN. How apt! We rolled into Secunda, pumping the Funky Town, cruising like we owned the place. See?

Won't you take me to...

Funky Town!
Ang squealed with joy when she saw a sign advertising Kurt Darren (a local Afrikaans singer who is as cheesy as the moon), and in her excitement, told us we simply had to go and see Durt Karren's show. Yup. Durt Karren. Things will never be the same again! (Sadly {NOT} for us, the show was only scheduled for this weekend, so we were a week early. *Angie pouted. A LOT.*)

The first thing we did was take a number for an ointment which, should it work, should be the solution to everyone’s problems. World wide. Imagine it! There would be no politics, no war, no violence, none of that would exist, because all of those things revolve around one issue. This cream could be the answer to World Peace! I think we should nominate its creator for a Nobel Peace Prize! Dial now!
What you got there, Heids?

Oh, World Peace! Or at least a Same day Service' penis cream! Win!
Then we hit the Wimpy for breakfast. My, my. I’d forgotten just how ‘small town’ these small towns are. We stood out like a sore thumb, and while we usually try to, Saturday was the exception. We were all about the casual-‘n-comfy for the long drive, so it was jeans and t-shirts for all of us. And yet…. It was SO VERY clear that we were from Joburg. And that was before we even opened our mouths. There were literally people staring at us from every single table in Wimpy. Maybe it’s because our hair moved on its own, and not with the assistance of a hacksaw or a pair of pliers. If the hairspray factory exploded in Secunda, well…. There would be a lot of ladies hiding out in their homes. Shoo-wee! There was one family next to us, on the other side of the glass, and they couldn’t take their eyes off us. I was desperately tempted to lick the window just to freak the shit out of them,  but then I saw a snotty-type kid smacking the glass, and thought it might not be a good idea. Instead, Angie gave one of her famous death-glares, and they left swiftly afterwards. Probably to go and pray that the evil Joburg girls didn’t get them. Ha! Once we were out of the spotlight, we got to our Game Plan. I busted out the butcher paper and endless pens, and we laid it all out in black (and green and purple) and white. Oh my, we got carried away!

Wimpy Coffee: Mega vs Regular
Once we’d had brekkie and looooots of coffee (and a green ambulance – a cream soda - or two), we moseyed off to the legendary make up store. I was planning to document the whole experience on camera, but got so swept away inside that I forgot completely. We went a little crazy. Collectively. I think the sales assistants were a little taken aback by our sheer determination to do some serious damage to our bank accounts! After all that though, I only bought four things. I think it was a case of optical overload, and I just literally couldn’t decide where to start, so I stuck to basics. *face-palm* All the same, I got some pretty cool stuff! I kept my Aus trip in the forefront of my mind, and came away with some practical things. Also: bright purple false lashes. What? A girl’s got Rocky Horror parties to plan for!

Total Haul

Purple Metallic False Eyelashes! WIN!

Versatile and oh-so-sparkly!
Angie went a little crazy in the store… it was quite inspiring to see that kind of shopping again. None of this laid-back just-cruising through stuff. Oh no! The lady was on a mission! And I think it was a resounding success!

After getting all googly-eyed over all the sparkles and neons and metallics and nails and STUFF, we strolled around the ‘mall’ for a while, trying to regain our composure. And then we skipped into the Lingerie and Cosmetics store, which was pretty entertaining! I never – NEVER – thought I’d see a metallic red and gold elephant-shaped banana-hammock in Secunda! We were on the hunt for cheap costumey stuff for Rocky Horror, but didn’t find anything that quite worked in our budget. Well, Ang did. The girl was on a roll! Oh, and I guess I did too, although the colour wasn’t right. I’ll make it work, though!

From there, we decided to explore Graceland. For those of you who are thinking that Elvis had a secret African paradise… if he did, it WOULD NOT be in Secunda! No, no, this Graceland is very different.

NOT Memphis, Tennessee, but it's still Graceland...
We went there in the hopes that they would still have the legendary singing mushrooms. No, we didn’t drink electric Kool-Aid on the way there!** Apparently, there used to be rather large mechanical mushrooms on the property, and they were motion-activated. Every time someone walked past them, they would start singing. OH HOLY CRAP, we couldn’t miss an opportunity to witness the magic of the singing mushrooms! We built ourselves up for the experience, and strolled around the entire casino. That took all of ten minutes. With a pee break! We couldn’t take it anymore, so we went in search of the funky fungi. Alas...
No singing mushrooms!
We nearly cried. In fact, I think there was a moment of mourning and some sniffling, but we soon got over it by photo-bombing a wedding with Princess, La’s spiffy little car! We also enticed her with ten points if she managed to run into the flower girl who was wearing her petal-basket as a hat, but she missed. Her punishment, we decided, was to wear the Camo Dress of Shame! We headed off to Trichardt, the neighbouring town, in search of it.

When we got there, Angie and Heidi were in awe. A&E should be called Akbar’s Cave of Everything! La and I made a beeline for the Camo Dress of Shame.

Not even remotely kidding
A deal’s a deal, and there were no singing mushrooms! Angie was enamoured with the Wookie-Gone-Wild look, and may have molested the mannequin. Maybe.*** After wandering around there for what felt like ages, but was only fifteen minutes (it couldn’t have been longer, because the detached voice on the intercom was reminding people that they had fifteen – ten – five minutes to shop before the store closed), and when we left, we were thoroughly exhausted. What a day! The drive home was a little more subdued than the drive there (isn’t it always?), but we still managed to giggle like dope-heads at a reggae festival. Not least of all when Heidi almost leapt out of the back window when La put her windscreen washer on without warning. You know the silent shriek of terror? Yea, that was Heidi. Hehehehe It doesn’t take much to amuse us, and when it’s something that is cruel in retrospect? Ah man, we die!

We saw a rainbow as we got back into Joburg, which was a pretty cool way to be welcomed back to the city!
Red and Yellow and Pink and Green... (big breath) Purple and Orange and Blue!

When we got home, all my family was just pulling in for a visit, so it was chaos, and a good time to end the day with a glass of wine and a round-up. Most of the family looked on, totally bemused, while Maja Boo heard the whole day’s stories in random, giggly succession, and looked thoroughly envious. Ah, road trips! For the Win!

I hope you enjoyed my little recap as much as I renjoyed recapping our trip! Until next time!

Wednesday Wonders - 4.5.2011

May the Fourth be with you

Happy Star Wars Day! (Surprise, surprise. I'm a little bit of a nerd at heart. Who knew?!)

The last week has been infinitely better and more fun than the two before it! Yippeeee! There's been so much that's made me squee with happiness! Thing like:

* Stopping at my sister, Lyn, on Friday night for 'just a couple of drinks'. Getting home just before 2 a.m. Dancing the night away with my big sisters and brothers-in-law. Rocking the 50's - 70's and 90's rounds of 'Name that Song/Artist'. Sucking spectacularly at the 80's round. Disguising Fanta Grape as red wine and not having a morose hangover on Saturday.

* Secunda Road Trip! We've been talking about it for so long, when it happened, it was too awesome! There was so much craziness and mayhem that the trip is getting a post of its own tomorrow, otherwise this list would go on for days.

* Family time! Rugby and pizzas with my family on Saturday night. My sisters and their families all came through to us for dinner, and it was so much of funness! Also: Lunch on Sunday with Mister Boo's sister and her family. It was an awesome weekend of family-ness.

* Crows. Just the sound of them makes me smile. Also: Woodland Hoopoes. They're SO pretty! And so cool when they trailed Mister Boo and I for most of our walk on Monday evening.

* Pamper day on Monday! Maja Boo went out for lunch, so I invaded her bathroom (spa bath! Bubbles! Red Wine! Awesomeness!). I did a face mask, hair treatment, smoothifying and got going on doing my nails. Didn't finish though, but at least I started!

* Seeing good friends who I haven't seen in aaaages! *Hi Aunty 'Lones!

* The Royal Wedding. Believe it or not. I get tetchy about things that come with lots of hype and tend to avoid them completely. Which I did with this. I didn't watch it live, even though the girls upstairs at work were streaming the whole thing. I did catch some of it later that day, and it was SO PRETTY! So I concede. The hype was kind of worth it. Also: Maja Boo pointed out that she got married the same year as Charles and Diana, and Mister Boo and I got hitched the same year as William and Catherine. hehe

* Learning to crochet. Or, as I call it to keep my housewifeyness in line, crotchet. What? I have an inner Bree van der Kamp who cooks and bakes beautifully, is always well turned out, and purses her lips and my lack of lady-like-ness and housewifey skills. Sometimes she takes over and demands to be in control. That's when I learn new housewifey things like crochet or sewing. Ha!
I can do this now! WIN!

* 24 days until Australia! Wooot!!

* Girls-only time. I don't get enough of it, so when I do get my paws on it, it's AWESOME!

* Preparing for a hectic few weeks ahead. I'm one-part excited, one-part already-exhausted and kind of at peace with the impending burnout. Yay!

* Being able to laugh at the really stressful times. If I lost my ability to laugh - at life, at other people's silliness and at myself - I would cease to function. The best kind of laughter for me, though? Dark, twisted humour. The kind of stuff that creeps people out. The kind of stuff that people always find funny, but don't always laugh at because they're too shocked to.

* Walking again! The plague is in my past, and on Monday, I dragged Mister Boo out for a walk. It was a short walk, and we didn't get to walk last night, but it made me feel like a million bucks nonetheless, and I can't wait to hit the road again tonight!

* This quote:

* The best news of the week, though? It's no contest. MISTER BOO STARTS HIS NEW JOB TODAY! After being a wonderful (no sarcasm, he's really been great) house-husband for seven months, my husband is part of the working class once again! I never thought I'd be so happy about that, but damn, I did a little dance and everything! Yay!

Little things that made me smile:

* Long gratitude lists * The Harry Potter Alliance * Car-aoke * Writing * New blog post series coming up soon * Funky Town * Durt Karren * Disconnecting from social media and current events over the long weekend * MindPop * Planning new creations, including birthday presents * Shaun of the Dead * Shoe-shopping anticipation * Birthday party anticipation (see here: Pizza 'n Pool, Rocky Horror Picture Show Parties) *

What about you, lovelies? What's made you beam like a ray of sunshine this week? Leave a comment and let me know!

"People are afraid of themselves, of their own reality; their feelings most of all. People talk about how great love is, but that's bullshit. Love hurts. Feelings are disturbing. People are taught that pain is evil and dangerous. How can they deal with love if they're afraid to feel? Pain is meant to wake us up. People try to hide their pain. But they're wrong. Pain is something to carry, like a radio. You feel your strength in the experience of pain. It's all in how you carry it. That's what matters. Pain is a feeling. Your feelings are a part of you. Your own reality. If you feel ashamed of them, and hide them, you're letting society destroy your reality. You should stand up for your right to feel your pain."

AUSTRALIA APPRECIATION MONTH: Part 1

In honour of my impending trip to the wonderful land of Oz, I’ve decided to celebrate.
I have to just mention here that there is an ongoing mud-slinging match between South Africa and Australia. It mostly revolves around sport, and some other random silliness, but it gets quite ridiculous and out of hand sometimes. And I’m rather ashamed to say that, in the heat of a tense rugby match, I may have lowered myself to yelling nastiness at Australian teams and referees on occasion. Despite this, and watching too much Border Security, I am looking on the bright side. Which is turning out to be pretty damn bright! Aside from the obvious – my best friend’s wedding and all the awesomeness that surrounds it – I’ve discovered some pretty cool things about Oz.

Now, if you’re expecting a post filled with cutesy baby koalas and kangaroos and platypuses (platypi?) (why do I always feel like a dirty sailor when I say 'platypuss'?), I’m going to tell you now that you’re going to be disappointed. While I am looking forward to seeing that kind of thing, the kind of thing that Australia Appreciation Month consists of is equally as squee-worthy, but in a completely different way. As in: you will be squeeing, but if you’re doing it at your desk, you might get fired. *ahem*

So, without further ado, I give you:

NICK CAVE

* Disclaimer: I have what some might call an unhealthy obsession with Nick Cave. Justsayin'... (Dare I remind you that my alias and blog name orginiate from a Nick Cave song?)

Born on 22 Sept 1957,  Warracknabeal, Australia but left Australia at 19, shortly after his father’s death. Since he left, he hasn’t lived in Australia again, and yet he’s maintained a distinctly Australian-angled persona and identity. His humour is dry, self-depreciating and sarcastic (an Australian special blend), his style is unique and mixes the sharp with the edgy and the totally weird in perfect synchronicity. The best part? He’s batshit insane!

Known for:
The Boys Next Door, The Birthday Party, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Grinderman

Where you might recognise him from:
Murder Ballads, an album released in 1996. His most mainstream hit came from this album; it was a duet done with Kylie Minogue (the total antithesis of Cave) called Where the Wild Roses Grow.

Whoooahh! Bite! Whoooah! Bite!
Release the bats! Release the bats!
Don't tell me that it doesn't hurt
A hundred fluttering in your skirt
Don't tell me that it doesn't hurt

O God, what have I done, he said
As her blood pooled in the sheets
But in his heart he felt a bliss
With which nothing could compete
O Mamma O Mamma

O ah hear her walkin',
Walkin' barefoot 'cross the floor-boards,
All thru this lonesome night,And ah hear her crying too.
Hot-tears come splashin' down,Leaking thru the cracks,
Down upon my face, ah catch'em in my mouth!

I keep hanging around your kitchenette
And I'm gonna get a pot to cook you in
I stick my fingers in your biscuit jar
And crush all your Gingerbread Men

I don't believe in an interventionist God
But I know, darling, that you do
But if I did I would kneel down and ask Him
Not to intervene when it came to you
Not to touch a hair on your head
To leave you as you are
And if He felt He had to direct you
Then direct you into my arms

A custard-coloured super-dream
Of Ali McGraw and Steve McQueen
I give to you

Somewhere she lies, this lovely creature
Beneath the slow drifting sands
With her hair full of ribbons
And green gloves on her hands
I hope you've enjoyed Part 1 of Australia Appreciation Month!
Until next time!

Love and platypi,

X

Wednesay Wonders - Freedom Day Edition

Via

The past week has been a bit disjointed with the public holidays and the sugar highs and crashes that come with Easter. In between the sugar crashes, these are the things that have made me smile.

* Freedom! Today is Freedom Day in SA, which is more than just another public holiday. It commemorates the first free elections in SA, and the changes that came with that.
Today I’m celebrating my own personal freedoms. I’m free from things that used to define me, things that I used to do and say that made me feel bad about myself, but I did them anyway. I’m free from old bad habits and of being blissfully ignorant of the important things. And this.

* Iron Fist Ruff Rider Platforms! Yes, still. I tried a pair on over the weekend and strutted around the store like Queen Bitch. The skater boys were enthralled with the rock-star girl prancing around their shop, grinning like a Cheshire cat. In the time I was there, they sold two other pars of Iron Fist shoes to curious girls yet to experience their magic. I,m heading back there this weekend to buy them.

* Road trip countdown!!! In just a few days, La, Ang and I descend on Secunda to create madness and mayhem. It’s going to be epic and I can’t wait!

* Finally - FINALLY - doing our wedding Thank-You cards!

* Snatch. Again. And finally understanding Mickey.

* After hesitantly thanking the stars that the plague didn’t get hold of me last week, it got me in its clutches on Thursday, and hung on tight. Nonetheless, I think I’m starting to shake it, and I’m hoping that once it’s gone, it’s gone. For good. Once is more than enough for me.

* On that note, Scott’s Emulsion! I’ve been dosing up on it since Friday, on La’s advice. It’s kept me from feeling too rough through the plague, which rocks my world. I’ve been mostly functional the past few days. Thanks La!

* Birthday Present Making. *smiles secretively*

* Runaways-inspired outfits (I watched it for the first time {!!!!!} over the long weekend, and have soooo many outfits planned out in my head!)

* 1 MONTH TILL AUSTRALIA! Woooot!!

Little things that made me smile:

* Avon Black Matt Nail polish * Rocket-Shoes * Tangled * Beetlejuice * Coraline * Reading the signs and understanding where they're leading me * Planning on starting to walk again with Dinee soon. Since the plague descended upon our home, it’s been a bit difficult, but now that it’s on its way out? Walkies!!! * Being a scanner *

EASTER SONG: Tom Waits - Chocolate Jesus

I'm not big on celebrating Easter. For various reasons, I've kind of avoided it for a few years now, and prefer to do my own thing over the long weekend. Usually, things that don't involve chocolate, because Easter seems to have become a celebration of chocolate more than anything in so many homes. Nonetheless, I don't really want to get started on social commentary today. I'll let Tom Waits do it for me...

Wednesday Wonders 20.4.2011

I wrote down where I found this, and now I cant' find where I wrote it! G-Dammit!

I've had a pretty quiet 7 days, so there aren't very many exciting things on today's list. It's actually been a bit of a bleak week (ha!), but I'm not entirely sure why. At least I'm not feeling as agro as I did last Wednesday, so it's not going to be such a 'Grrrrr' post either!

This week I've loved:

* Shine A Light - The Rolling Stones DVD. Man, Keith Richards is my hero. Maja Boo just finished reading his autobiography, Life, so in celebration, we snuggled down and watched Shine A Light again. All of them are amazing, naturally, but Keith? Inimitable. Indestructible. Incredible.

* Midnight inspiration. I don't know why, but inspiration and ideas so often strike as I'm slipping into bed. Then I haul my laptop out and write away for an hour or so, or until I fall asleep. When the latter happens, I have been known to wake up to pages of llllllllllllllllllllllllllllll or some such nonsense, which always makes me giggle.

* Iron Fist Ruff Rider Platforms! These are like the Keith Richards of shoes for me at the moment. And the fact that I'll be getting my paws on them very soon, and rocking them to Stephy's wedding... Let's just say I feel like a rock-star already, and I haven't even tried them on yet! Woo-Woo!!!
Fuck yea!

* Impromptu one-woman movie fests! I wasn't really in a very social mood this weekend (which might have had something to do with the fact that it was the 2nd anniversary of Faja Boo's death) so I installed myself on the couch with my laptop, flash drives, DVDs, books, juice, wine, music and loads of pens. You know, the usual supplies one might need for a Saturday afternoon spent doing not very much at all. I have a whole stack of movies I haven't watched for ages, if at all, so I pulled the old favourites out first. Things like The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, Idle Hands, 12 Monkeys, Sleepers... You know, lighthearted stuff.

* The Doors vs Blondie - Rapture Rider

* Nick Cave. Specifically, listening to Nick Cave and heavy rain on rotation and feeling content. (Some of the songs on rotation over the weekend.)

* Down another 3.4 kgs!!! Yay!!! That's 9 down in total now!

* Family time! We didn't get to see Bren, Mark & Megan on Thursday because Maja Boo was sick & potentially contagious, but we got to see them on Sunday, and it was GREAT! So So SO awesome to be together again, even if it was just for a few hours! Can't wait for them to get back from the coast and catch up a bit. Yay!

* Road-trip planning! Next weekend, La, Ang and I are undertaking a quest of potentially epic and disastrous proportions. We are going to Secunda (read: middle-of-nowhere, but with pretty flowers on the way) in search of a tiny - and I mean tiny - make up store that sells hundreds of brands at insanely low prices. Last time La & I were there with Maja Boo, we bought ridiculous glittery turquoise nail polish and glitter. motherfucking. hair gel, as well as some more practical eye shadows and lipsticks. This time? Practicality be damned, I'm going for the showstoppers!

Little things which made me smile:

* Mister Boo's crazy, random and usually nonsensical songs which he makes up on the fly and sings to me in his best chipmunk voice * "She reminds me of a psychedelic ostrich" * You Can't Always Get What You Want blasting in Bella, Maja Boo's car. The sound in that car is incredible. And don't get me started on that song! * Writing all night, sleep be damned! * Chocolates for Easter which have little surprise pop-rocks in them! Crackle for hours! WoooHoooo! * A quick walk last night, after a week off because of the plague that has struck down everyone around me. * On a related note, and at the risk of jinxing things, feeling healthy even though everyone around me is plagued out. Long may it last! * Aus Anticipation! 37 more sleeps!!! OMG! * Speaking Pirate to Mister Boo as we debate the merits of setting sail on his imaginary boat, which has a submarine following it, to hunt his imaginary nemesis down. I said I wasn't going unless it was a yellow submarine and we were all issued with blue shorts and red beanies, and a complimentary glock. * 4 year olds with mohawks. *

Et vous, preciouses? What's made you binky this week?

MUSIC MONDAY: Keith Richards & Ron Wood - You Got The Silver

This is one of my favourite songs of all time.
When we were still planning to have a more 'traditional' wedding, with me walking down the aisle, the plan was for a very good friend to play this as I walked into the chapel and down the aisle.
It's a truly beautiful and timeless piece of music.
Enjoy!

(From the 'Shine a Light' DVD (2007), which Maja Boo and I watched again on Friday night.)

Cool, huh? :)
